Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur


Manchester United will face Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup Final on 1 March 2009 after both clubs came through difficult semi-finals against Championship sides.

It will be the first meeting in a final between two of the more successful clubs in major domestic cup competitions.

Manchester United have reached the finals of the FA or League Cup 24 times, winning on 13 occasions, while Spurs have reached the finals of either competition 15 times, winning on 12 occasions.  In terms of domestic cup competition, the top 10 are as follows:

Manchester United and Tottenham are amongst the top five clubs that have won 12 or more domestic cup finals.  Most of the meetings between the top five clubs have occurred since 1971. All of them have taken place since 1950:

In 1971 itself, both finals involved clubs from the top 5.

Of the clubs in the top 5, Arsenal have never met either Tottenham Hotspur or Aston Villa in a domestic cup final, nor have Liverpool met Aston Villa.

Liverpool have met each of Arsenal and Manchester United four times in domestic cup competition.

Tottenham’s meetings with Aston Villa, Liverpool, and now Manchester United, have all been in the League Cup Final.

Manchester United will now have met all of the other four in domestic cup finals.

Chelsea, the sixth most successful cup side, have met all of the top 5 in finals.
