European football · Records & statistics

Benfica have finished outside the top three in Portugal on only 5 occasions since the Portuguese Championship was reformed as a league in 1938.

I doubt any other club in any of the “leading” European leagues (a league that has provided a European Champion), can boast such a record – definitely not in England, Spain, Italy, Germany or France. I doubt any Dutch club can, but I’m not sure about Scotland, Yugoslavia/Serbia or Romania).

However, 3 of those 5 occasions have been since 2001 (2001, 2002 and this season). The previous 2 occasions were in 1940 and 1941.
