Liverpool v Manchester United

Looking at the aggregate performance of Man Utd and Liverpool in the top flight since 1946, Man Utd are well ahead, having spent 7 seasons more in the top flight than Liverpool. In fact, Liverpool lie third, after Arsenal in second place.

However, taking a 40-game average since 1946, Liverpool are marginally ahead of Man Utd (up to the end of last season).

All time (since 1888 ) up to the end of last season, Everton are just 5 points ahead of Liverpool. Every time Liverpool move more than 5 points ahead of Everton this season, they will overtake Everton.

However, taking an all-time 40-game average, Man Utd are just 0.14 points ahead of Liverpool (as at the end of last season).

Between 1973 and 1990, Liverpool managed:

7 in 9 seasons (1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984)
10 in 15 seasons (1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990)
11 championships in 18 seasons (1973, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990)

From 1993 to 2007, Manchester United have managed:

7 in 9 seasons (1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001)
9 in 15 season (1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2007)

Man Utd have fallen behind a bit in recent seasons. They will need to win the title in 2 of the next 3 seasons to equal Liverpool’s 11 in 18 seasons.

  1. You could argue it hasnt been good for English football…

Clubs going out of business, running up astronomical debts, decline of the national team, average foreign imports getting £40k a week…£1500 for season tickets…£45 for a pie (ok that last one was an exaggeration…)

    And in reply to

and the players used to burgle the fans houses.

Dont dey still do dat der doh?
