Local Rivalry In English Cup Finals

The Arsenal-Chelsea FA Cup Final this season was the fifth time two London clubs have met in the FA Cup Final.

All-London FA Cup Finals:

1967 Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea 2-1
1975 West Ham United v Fulham 2-0
1980 West Ham United v Arsenal 1-0
1982 Tottenham Hotspur v Queen’s Park Rangers 1-1, 1-0
2002 Arsenal v Chelsea 2-0

Both Arsenal and Chelsea have previously reached, and lost, an all-London FA Cup Final, Chelsea in 1967, losing 1-2 to Tottenham, and Arsenal in 1980, losing 0-1 to West Ham.

Liverpool is the only other English city to provide both FA Cup Finalists, with Liverpool meeting Everton in the FA Cup Final in 1986, and again in 1989, Liverpool winning on both occasions – 3-1 in 1986 (to do the double) and 3-2 (after extra-time) in 1989.  Liverpool and Everton also met in the League Cup Final in 1984, Liverpool winning 1-0 after extra time.

In the West Midlands, West Bromwich Albion have met the two Birmingham clubs (Aston Villa and Birmingham City) four times in the FA Cup Final.

All-West Midlands FA Cup Finals:

1887 Aston Villa v West Bromwich Albion 2-0
1892 West Bromwich Albion v Aston Villa 3-0
1895 Aston Villa v West Bromwich Albion 1-0
1931 West Bromwich Albion v Birmingham 2-1

West Bromwich Albion met Aston Villa three times in the FA Cup between 1887and 1895, winning once and losing twice.

The two Birmingham clubs themselves met in the League Cup Final in 1963, Birmingham City beating Aston Villa 3-1 on aggregate in a two-legged final.

The two Manchester clubs, City and United, have never met in an FA Cup Final.  However, both Manchester clubs have met Bolton Wanderers (which now falls within the Greater Manchester metropolitan area) in the FA Final.

1904 Manchester City v Bolton Wanderers 1-0
1926 Bolton Wanderers v Manchester City 1-0
1958 Bolton Wanderers v Manchester United 2-0

The only other occasion that local rivals met in the finals of an English cup final is when East Midlands rivals, Nottingham Forest and Derby County met in the FA Cup Final, as long ago as in 1898, Nottingham Forest winning 3-1.
